Backflips Skate Jam

Nick Butcher » Back One
Nick Butcher » Back One

There’s something about a big floaty backside 180 that looks great. As my friend Matt Turner said, they always look best with your hood up, front zip open and arms out. Here’s one of my favs of Nick Butcher from the recent Backflips Skate Jam in Timaru. Check the sequence below. To see more photos from the jam, head over to backflips.co.nz

The Douglas Street Handrail — Timaru

On a recent road trip south of Christchurch, something by someone went down real nice on that rail moments before this photo was taken… keep posted to find out.

Waltham Skate Jam Out Take

One of the unwritten laws of skate photography: the trick must be stomped. In this case for Jordan Kidd he didn’t quite pull this back one off in the recent Waltham Skate Jam. But I’m gonna put this up anyway because I love the photo itself, and I know with confidence that this guy can stomp this.

You can see the rest of the photos from this comp over at the Cheapskates Skate Skool website.

Light Up Charity Gig Photos

None Left Standing

Yesterday a very cool gig happened here in Christchurch — the Light Up Charity Gig. All the bands, organisers, and sponsors (including Enquire Design) collaborated together and dedicated valuable time and effort for this show to go ahead, with all proceeds going toward the Salvation Army, The Dux, and Al’s Bar. Hopefully an injection like this will see more live bands playing around what has been a quiet scene lately.

Below are some photos I got from the show for the sets of Loaded Victim, Kaizen Mofos, Merchants of Flow, Mynor Star, Suede Arcade, and None Left Standing. Sorry if you fell outside of this time slot, I missed you. If you’re a band wanting to use these photos, go ahead and grab em’, please just leave the watermark/logo in the corner. (more…)

Light Up Charity Gig Poster Design Process

Light Up Charity Poster

As part of our recent events, we stumbled across the early stages of what would be one of the largest gigs in the Christchurch area for a while — a charity fundraiser event to help out local music venues get back on their feet post the earthquake. Not only was it obvious that Kaira from K.Dawg Promotions was putting in a lot of her time organising the event, but also the dedication of the 19 local bands that were going to make it happen. This is where we decided to get involved as well.

Below is an insight to how the above poster was designed.

Firstly the concept of the poster was finalised with the association of music bringing life back into our broken city, rather that looking at the broken city as a negative. Secondly, the content and format were considered, A3 and 19 bands — meaning a reasonably type heavy poster. To make this work effectively, we drafted the type up in InDesign — yes, sometimes the computer is faster than skatching for formulating a preview). After some black and white print outs, it gave a real good idea of what space we were left with to compliment and compose with imagery and graphic devices.

Grom of the Month

Liam Currie » Front Indy | Thomson Park
Liam Currie » Front Indy | Thomson Park

Here’s little more of a taster from the last post featuring Liam. Over at Cheapskates Skate Skool, we’re starting up a “Grom of the Month” feature, where once a month we select a young ripper from the Christchurch area, take them out for a shoot at their favourite spot and give them some quick fire questions. A little bit of fun!

Keep up as we build up our list of up and coming skaters here.

Sadhana’s 6’3″ Balsa Fish Up For Auction

Sadhana's Balsa Fish

One of our great clients Sadhana Surfboards have recently been crafting a 6’3″ Balsa Fish that is now up for auction. The board which is partially made up of recycled materials from demolished buildings close to Sadhana’s factory, is going to be a fundraiser for the Red Cross in support of the ongoing recovery since our 6.3mag earthquake in February. The board is beautifully made and representative of a challenging time for many in and around Christchurch. We wish Jay all the best with the auction, and the lucky winner a big thumbs up, you’ll sure be stoked with that board!

Out Cold Promo Shoot

Out Cold

Out Cold

Here’s a couple of recent shots from a promo shoot for our local hardcore band — Out Cold. We worked a couple of places around our ruined city, adding some drama and a touch of brutality to the backgrounds whilst being careful not to be a cliche earthquake shot that would date quickly.

To find out more about Out Cold, check out their site here.
