The Gallery Exposed — Sadhana Surfboards

Sadhana Shoot Setup

A little while back we launched a pretty cool website for local shaper Jay Jackman at Sadhana Surfboards. No doubt some of you have already seen the design of the website but what we wanted to really highlight was the process behind the surfboard gallery.

Around the web these day you may have come across a 360 degree viewer, say a pair of shoes, even snowboards, but we were about to do it with Sadhana’s range of 14 different surfboard models. Over 2 shoots and a dedicated assistant (thanks Ruben!) we took over 350 frames right in the Sadhana showroom. Each board shot was given the same treatment: a single full rotation in 25 frames. It brought out the counting/maths brains in both of us for sure. The camera was set up on a tripod, and to help aid the post-production process, the stringer of each board had to line up with the viewfinder grid in the camera.

Surfboard RotationOnce all the images were shot, it was back to the office for organised numbering and foldering, clear cutting, and exporting for web (actions in Photoshop were gold here). Once the photos were ready, we used Flash to create the slideshow. This was to give the user full control over the rotation playback and allow pausing on any angle needed.

See the full animation before clearcutting on the left.

To see the final result and to see more sweet shapes, visit Sadhana’s board gallery here.

If you’ve seen some pretty cool animated stuff, feel free to share below.

TwinNeedle Custom Sackbuilder
The TwinNeedle Custom Sackbuilder

We’ve just completed a nice new addition to one of our client’s websites — TwinNeedle Outdoor Equipment Repairs, and it was a really fun project to say the least. After establishing themselves as a solid little repair company in the Christchurch outdoor community, TwinNeedle naturally evolved into creating the occasional custom made item. Once things picked up more, and customer demand was noted, the team decided to release a product range in the pack department.

A Little Dust-off; The Journey To Brilliance

During my final year of studies, I had the opportunity to design a few websites in real-world situations, one of them couldn’t be more real— The Journey To Brilliance. Bruce McIntyre, my former employer years ago at Macpac Wilderness approached me and introduced me to his past project he’d been slowly working on for the last decade. The ultimate aim of J2B was to reform education. At first I was quite lost and ‘wowed’ by the statement, the website would initially have no tangible product or service to sell—it was an idea, and as it turns out, a really good idea.

The Sideways Scroller; Trengrove Art

It’s always a buzz when friends from design school look you up and see what you’ve been up to and vice-versa, but it’s even cooler when they focused mainly on print design and they ask if you can put a portfolio website together for them.

My friend Hayley Trengrove was my last candidate for this. She is a talented artist designing under the name of Trengrove Art, covering a range of media—from stencil art, to graphic design, to photography. A lot of her work is inspired by her life-long passion for music, and I believe that is where her work begins to gather a style that portrays a relaxed, alternative feel.
